- Lot Description
Mesut Özil enjoyed a brilliant football career in Europe that spanned almost two decades. Known for his ball control, technical skills and vision, he is considered one of the greatest midfielders and playmakers of his generation. To date, nobody has won more German National Team Player of the Year honors than his five. Starting in Schalke 04’s youth system, young Özil became a rising star in Bundesliga when he transferred to Werder Bremen in 2006 at the age of 19. After impressing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Özil was heavily sought by several major European clubs, but it was Real Madrid who won the bidding war.
In his first season at the Bernabeú in 2010/11, Özil had 25 assists to lead La Liga and all major European leagues. Wearing the #10 shirt, he went on to lead the league in assists for three consecutive seasons and helped the storied club win a record 32nd La Liga title. In 2013, the now world-recognized footballer nicknamed “Nemo” moved to the Premier League where he became a fixture in Arsenal’s starting lineup for nine years, adding more trophies and accolades to his resumé.
Offered here is one of Mesut Özil’s Real Madrid match worn home shirts from the 2012/13 season. It was exchanged with Real Betis defender Antonio Amaya after a La Liga match at Santiago Bernabéu on April 20, 2013. The white long-sleeved Adidas jersey has the famous club’s crest logo on the left chest and kit sponsor “bwin” in big black letters across the front. The La Liga patch adorns the right sleeve and a classy “110 Años 1902 2012” patch honoring the club’s long history is sewn on the left sleeve. The reverse has “ÖZIL” on the upper back and his No. “10” below in blue. Adidas stripes run along both sleeves and blue trim rings the collar and sleeve ends. Inside the collar is an Adidas size tag (M) and dated manufacturer’s tag (05/12). The shirt displays a moderate level of wear and appears to have been washed post-use. Includes letter of provenance from Antonio Amaya, who played for Real Betis from 2011-14.
