In Major League Baseball, the closer has a thankless job. Take the ball in the 9th inning and get the toughest three outs of the game. Under intense pressure, he is expected to come through and preserve the win no matter what. Convert 20 straight saves and fans barely notice. Blow one and they call for his head. Relief specialists Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage, and Dennis Eckersley refined the role in the 1970s and 80s with a masterful combo of mustaches and mojo, bringing a level of intimidation emulated by many modern-day closers. Then came Brian Wilson, whose thick black beard, mohawk, tattoos and jacked physique on the mound – along with his deadpan humor off it – made for a true 1-of-1 beloved in the City by the Bay and remembered by all.
Drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2003 out of LSU, the 6’ 1” flame-thrower developed into a reliever reliable enough for manager Bruce Bochy to give him the closer’s job in 2008. Over the next four seasons, “B-Weezy” saved 163 games (most in MLB in that span) and earned three NL All-Star nods. Most importantly, he helped the Giants snap a 56-year title drought in 2010 and win their first World Series in San Francisco. For longtime fans of the Orange and Black, two moments from that magical campaign will live in infamy: Wilson striking out Ryan Howard looking to end the NLCS; and #38 blowing a fastball by Nelson Cruz for the final out of the Fall Classic.
The “Fear the Beard” mantra became a pop culture phenomenon in the Bay Area and beyond. Interviews with the local and national media (particularly Jim Rome) were must-see. Nobody knew what the colorful character would say or do next. In 2011, decked out in a full LSU football uni, Wilson went on ESPN’s College GameDay as the Tigers' celebrity picker. After winning his second World Series ring with the Giants in 2012, Wilson played his final two seasons with the Dodgers and settled in Los Angeles after retirement. SCP is excited to present the Brian Wilson Collection in this auction with all items coming straight from B-Weezy himself.
This lot features Wilson’s most significant item: his San Francisco Giants 2010 World Series Champions ring made of 14-karat white and yellow gold by Tiffany & Co. The face spells out "SF" in 34 round melee diamonds flanked by two round diamonds and encircled by a bezel of yellow gold with the words "WORLD CHAMPIONS" in raised lettering. All four perimeter sides contain a row of nine round-cut diamonds. One shank has the year "2010" flanking a yellow gold tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. The other shank includes "WILSON" across a ribbon that floats over a raised image of the World Series trophy. Within the top of the trophy is an orange Spessartine garnet representing the franchise's first title in San Francisco; at the base of the trophy are five diamonds representing the Giants' five New York titles. Engraved within the interior band are the results of the team’s three 2010 postseason tallies: "SFG 3 - ATL 1, SFG 4 - PHI 2, SFG 4 - TEX 1.” Also stamped inside the band is “TIFFANY & CO. 585” to denote its 14-karat gold content. Boasting a grand total of 77 diamonds, this beautiful ring comes in size 9 and weighs 78 grams.
This coveted championship ring represents the Giants' first ever title in the City by the Bay, awarded to the club’s popular pitcher in the shiny black beard who closed it down. It shows moderate wear and remains well-preserved with all elements intact. Includes its original black presentation box (5x5x2.5”) with a gold-embossed "November 1, 2010” and SF 2010 World Champions logo. Comes with a signed letter of provenance from Brian Wilson.
