- Lot Description
An absolutely stunning poster for a closed-circuit viewing of the 1964 Sonny Liston-Cassius Clay world heavyweight championship fight. Although the actual fight was held in the Miami Beach Convention Hall before 8,000, the fervor drummed up in the months leading up meant millions of fans would not be able to see it live. This necessitated a closed-circuit hookup to 350 theaters and auditoriums across the U.S. and Canada, where eager fans could see the title bout. Going into the fight, Clay was the 8:1 underdog, with many believing he did not have a chance against the more powerful Liston. However, after surviving the first two rounds, Clay began to gain confidence. In the sixth, Clay was able to land numerous combinations to Liston’s body. Liston failed to come out of his corner at the seventh round bell, and Cassius Clay was declared the winner and new heavyweight champion of the world. In addition to the regular fight posters produced for the actual venue in Miami where the fight took place, a different version was made for use in the closed-circuit locations.
This poster advertised the fight viewing at the Civic Auditorium in Bakersfield, California. The graphics on this classic fight poster are outstanding — from the dramatic black-and-white full-body photos of Liston and Clay, to the bright yellow background and slashing red headlines. There is some edge wear found on the poster's wide white borders, and some light staining on the upper right portion, but the colors remain eye-poppingly bright, and it displays beautifully. A tremendous piece that documents the fight where Cassius Clay began his ascent into boxing stardom.
