George Douglas Brewerton (American, 1827-1901) Signed & dated in both lower left & right
Year: 1865
Medium: Oil on canvas.
Frame: 38" x 32"
Image:29 1/2" x 24 1/2"
Condition: The image exhibits wear on the upper left side from contact with the frame and displays craquelure throughout. The frame shows very minor nicks with slight separation at the mitered corners.
About:
George Douglas Brewerton (1827–1901) was an American painter, writer, and soldier. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1846 and served in the Mexican-American War. Alongside his military career, Brewerton became known as an author and journalist, contributing travel writings and poetry to periodicals of the mid-19th century.
As an artist, he worked primarily in the Hudson River School tradition, producing landscapes that reflected the Romantic spirit of the era. His paintings often depicted the American West, the Hudson River Valley, and New England, combining topographical detail with atmospheric light. Brewerton’s dual experiences as a soldier and traveler informed his artistic vision, bridging documentary observation with the aesthetics of 19th-century American landscape painting.

No problem — just let us know within 4 days of the auction closing if you plan to:
- Use your own shipping provider
- Arrange for a third-party pickup

- We require that all shipments go to the registered billing address on file with your payment method.
