A FABERGE JEWELLED GOLD-MOUNTED CARVED NEPHRITE FIGURE OF AN ELEPHANT AND CASTLE, MICHAEL PERCHIN, ST. PETERSBURG, 1888-1899
humorously carved, standing and smiling, supporting a gold blanket surmounted by a gold turret enamelled with white and red champleve stonework, and gold bands across the body with channels of red guilloche surmounted by a gold blanket on its back, the blanket bearing the workmaster's initials in Cyrillic of MP for Michael Perchin, 56 standard, and town mark of St. Petersburg; overall height: 3.6 cm (1 3/8 in.), length: 3 cm ( 1 1/8 in.).
Most likely, this elephant and similar ones like it by Faberge were inspired by the Order of the Elephant, the highest order of chivalry in Denmark.
