Note: Born in Vienna, Marguerite Stix came to the United States in 1941 and became a well-known sculptor. Along with R. Tucker Abbott, Marguerite and her husband, Hugh, wrote The Shell: Five Hundred Million Years of Inspired Design, which showed several pieces from the Stix shell collection. Stix used shells as gemstones in her jewelry, and said: "Here was my chance to combine this perfect sculpture with just the right combinations of responding colors, to compose jewels that bring out the personality of the wearer."
