Anglo/American School, 19th Century
Country Town View with Distant Church. Unsigned, inscribed "Mary S. Baxter/from Father" on the reverse. Oil on pressed paperboard, 11 1/8 x 13 in., framed. Condition: Drying cracks, surface accretions, varnish discoloration.
N.B. The identity of the creator of this painting is unknown. Mary S. Baxter, the person named in the inscription, is assumed to be the individual described in an obituary in The Boston Globe as "Baxter, Mary S. "Sally" "Nana" (Gardner-Forbush) of Brookline, in her 94th year on April 15, 2011..." Mrs. Baxter worked for the Brookline Public Schools.
