- Lot Description
Antique Diamond Brooch, mid-19th century, set with old mine-cut diamonds, approx. total wt. 15.00 cts., 4 1/2 x 1 3/4 in.
Provenance: Irene Langhorne Gibson (1873-1956), wife of famed American illustrator Charles Dana Gibson. Born in Virginia, Irene Langhorne was the daughter of railroad industrialist Chiswell Langhorne. Her sister was Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor, American-born British politician and the first woman seated as a Member of Parliament. The Langhorne sisters were known for their beauty and would later inspire some of Gibson's work. In 1894, Langhorne met Gibson at Delmonico's in New York City while attending a dinner in her honor. They married the following year, and Irene became the muse for her husband's iconic "Gibson Girl." She used her influence to take on numerous social causes and political issues in the early 20th century. Much of her work focused on disadvantaged children, which would continue throughout her life. The brooch as well as the antique earrings, (Lot 2) have descended through the family.Condition
Condition: Mount is likely rhodium-plated silver-topped gold. Bend to pinstem. Alterations. Larger diamonds have been removed.
