Continental School, 19th Century
Dutch-style Still Life with Shells, Fruit, Urn, and Chinese Tea Box
Oil on canvas, 22 x 22 in. (56.0 x 56.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Patch reinforcement, retouch, paint losses, craquelure, canvas deformation, surface grime.
The work is overpainted with spandrels providing the round format for the still life. This may be a later addition or an afterthought of the painter, because the canvas is painted all the way to the tacking edges, as if with a continuation of the composition. The motif along the very bottom resembles a rug or fabric design.
