Early French Dragoon Pistol, c. 1690-1700, a pre-regulation pistol with a 16 in., .30 caliber octagon-to-round barrel marked at the breech with a horseshoe-shaped stamp; walnut stock with carved plateaus around the lock, breech plug tang, entry pipe and rammer channel; unmarked curved lock with convex surface and sculpted line decoration at edge; iron furniture including plain iron butt cap with long narrow grip straps, heart/foliate thumbpiece, trigger guard with point-over-disc finial, scrolling serpent side plate, ring decorated rammer pipes and wooden rammer with iron button tip, overall lg. 23 3/4 in.
Condition
Condition: Metal patinated to brown with some mottling on the barrel; lock top jaw appears to be a very early replacement and the sear is likely replaced; stock with minor dings and dents; scattered professional wood restoration to stock including wood restoration at base of grip on the inner surface below trigger guard and adjacent to butt cap, right forend has a narrow strip of wood restoration along top edge, left side of forend has wood restoration along the top edge, front 5/8 in. of forestock restored; rammer not original.
