N.B. This lot presents a rare opportunity to watch Benson's composition shift from conception through its early development. Benson began by delineating the individual birds and marking in a fine line to represent the horizon. Trial C shows the birds essentially completed and the water and horizon expressed, but before grasses and clouds are added. In all the artist created seven states before arriving at the final published state of this composition.
