French School, 17th Century
Holy Family with Infant St. John the Baptist in a Classical Landscape, Rabbit in Foreground
Unsigned.
Oil on canvas, 16 x 13 in. (40.5 x 32.7 cm), unframed.
Condition: Lined, paint losses, craquelure, scattered abrasions, varnish inconsistencies and discoloration, surface grime.
N.B. The rabbit shown in this painting is an allusion to the Virgin’s virginity and the immaculate conception of Christ.Condition
Condition: The work is not framed.
The corners of the canvas have trompe l'oeil painted spandrels to create the illustion of an oval composition. The dimensions of the oval are 14 3/8 x 12 1/4 in. The vertical sides of the canvas are trimmed so that those edges of the oval are cropped.
