Marion Boyd Allen (American, 1862-1941)
Drifting Clouds
Signed and dated "Marion Boyd Allen/1933" l.r., titled on a handwritten label affixed to the stretcher and on a label from Vose Galleries of Boston affixed to the back of the frame.
Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (50.8 x 61.0 cm), in a period frame.
Condition: Tack holes to the corners, craquelure, minor surface grime.
Provenance: By descent within the family of the artist.
N.B. Marion Boyd Allen enrolled at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston at the age of 36, studying under both Edmund C. Tarbell and Frank W. Benson. Upon receipt of her diploma in 1910, Allen focused on portraiture, exhibiting her work widely and garnering critical acclaim for portraits of her female contemporaries. In 1925, at the age of 63, she traveled West and renewed an interest in landscapes that had begun with sketches of the Alps on family holidays as a child. For the next ten years she traveled extensively, from the Grand Canyon to the Canadian Rockies, hiking and camping alone as she painted remote, awe-inspiring vistas.Condition
