Two ink on paper, both signed, inscribed 'Happy Birthday, Chris - Alex, 10.13.80' and 'For Chris - Happy Birthday, 10.9.84 Love, Alex Katz'.
Both 7 x 9 in. (sheet), 14 x 15 3/4 in. (frame).
Note: Christopher Walling met Alex and Ada Katz in 1975 through Walling's partner, Sanford Schwartz, who was writing about the artist at the time. The couples shared a long friendship, vacationing in Maine and on the island of Nevis together. During a stay on Nevis in 1977, Katz asked the group if he could paint them on the beach. The two studies in this lot were preparatory sketches for the finished painting titled Round Hill. The figures in the finished painting include Ada (in sunglasses), Vincent Katz (reading), Christopher Walling (reclining in the back), Elizabeth Cramer (at left, a friend of Walling's and Schwartz's) and Sanford Schwartz (in the foreground). The finished painting is in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and was recently exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum's 2023 retrospective Alex Katz: Gathering.
Both with pale staining and soft creasing. Otherwise both in good condition.
Notwithstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.
Gift of the artist.
The Collection of Christopher English Walling.
