Note: The arms as mounted engraved upon this Fine Louis XIV Silver Mounted Ebonized Cabinet on Stand are those of the Kingdom of France. They may be blazoned as follows: Azure three fleurs-de-lis or
The arms are set between two-winged leonine grotesques with a demi-fleur-de-lys at the base with other stylised fleurs-de-lys at the top. The arms are further ensigned with a crowned salamander.
This cabinet is stated as dating from the reign of King Louis XIV of France and Navarre between 1638 – 1715. It is not known for certain if it was ever part of the furnishings of any Royal palace or residence. If not, alternatively, the addition of the Royal Arms could be purely decorative or at the very least showing an allegiance to the king or the then Royal House.
The version of the Royal Arms shown here dates from 1376 and were used consistently by the Kings of France thereafter. The use of the salamander as seen here ensigning the arms was originally adopted as a personal badge by King Francis I.
Generally, in good overall condition with expected losses and wear. Lacking a silver panel on the upper right. Minor age splits and silver inlaid string banding lifting on the side panels.
