Oil on canvas, unsigned, lined, with two old paper labels naming the sitter as Nell Gwynne on the frame.
50 1/2 x 40 in., 58 x 48 in. (frame).
Note: A portrait by Sir Peter Lely of the Honorable Mrs. Lucy Loftus from the collection of Cornelius Vanderbilt II was sold at Sotheby's in 2023. Lucy married Adam Loftus in 1673 and it is thought that the portrait was painted just before her marriage. The version being offered in this lot is the same composition but with the sitter's dress in a different color. Another version is in the collection of the Birmingham Museums Trust, Art UK. A paper label on the frame of this work indicates that the sitter is Nell Gwynne, who was an actress and mistress of King Charles II. Lely painted several portraits of Nell Gwynne similarly dressed to the sitter here in a low-cut bodice as was fashionable during the Restoration period.
Lined. Craquelure with separation, some lifting and inpainting. A repair upper left quadrant, inpainted. The upper edge inpainted. Surface soiling. An area of pressure lower right.
Notwithstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.
Collection of Elizabeth Kahn-Ingelby.
