In two parts.
37 1/2 x 26 1/2 x 26 in.
This assertive chair design, which is almost identical to model number 342 in the Kimbel and Cabus photographic archive in the Cooper Hewitt, is a very intriguing rarity confirming Anton Kimbel's familiarty with progressive Germanic design. It is seen multiple times, in watercolor renderings by J. H. W. Luer, an important member of the Hanover School of Design, which are held in the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kessel. It is also illustrated with cushioned seat in "Art Decoration as Applied to Furniture" by Harriet Prescott Spofford, Harper & Brothers, New York 1878. Though Spofford illustrated many forms from the Kimbel and Cabus firm, she captions this chair as being Flemish, inaccurately but perhaps in awareness of its initial northern continental source.
Scattered nicks and minor staining to the oak throughout. The leather upholstery with cracks and losses, which will need attention. The seat with a slight wobble, but swivels smoothly. Structurally sound.
Notwithstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.
