- Lot Description
Oil on canvasboard, 1894-1905, signed with monogram lower left, titled and inscribed (in another hand) 'Painted, together with the large portrait, at Melville Castle, 1894, by R. Duddingstone Herdman (Finished for Viscount Mellville 1905)' on a label on the reverse. 12 3/4 x 8 1/2 in., 17 1/2 x 13 1/2 in. (frame). Provenance: Exhibited J. R. Herbert Boone Collection, (via Johns Hopkins University), Alex Cooper Auctioneers, Baltimore, 1988. The full size version is said to be in the national Portrait Gallery, London.
