American painter Theodore Robinson was academically trained at the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League and the École des Beaux-Arts, moving to France in 1884 where he would spend the next eight years painting in the French countryside. During this period, Robinson became the leading American disciple of the progressive Impressionist painter Claude Monet. Robinson moved next door to Monet in Giverny in 1887 to learn from and work beside Monet, painting some of the masterpieces of American Impressionism during this period. This work was executed circa 1886 during Robinson's early years in France and before he was installed at Giverny.
