Late 19th century, a large fragment from the side of a New Guinea canoe, probably from the Middle Sepik River, with carved crocodile designs and two ancestor heads, (wood loss and cracks and trace of paper label). Collected on the voyage around the world of the La Korrigane (1934-1936). Lg. 38 ¼, ht. 9 ¼ in. Provenance: Private collection, Albuquerque, NM; Private French collection; La Korrigane expedition, 1934-6.
