- Lot Description
19th century, almost certainly from Krishnanagar, the town famous for producing the finest of these sought after Victorian souvenirs. Most with labels indicating occupations, including Fisherman, Snake Charmer, Sweeper, Postman, Priest, Shoe Maker, etc. Each crafted of unfired clay over wire armature. Firing the clay was considered bad luck as each face was modeled on that of an actual townsperson. This resulted in fragile figures, few of which have survived. Missing elements, damages and a few repairs, but in quite good condition for these.
