Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 48 × 60 cm. The work depicts the biblical episode in which Moses brings forth water from the rock to quench the thirst of the people of Israel during their journey through the desert, one of the most significant passages in the Book of Exodus. The scene is organized around the figure of the prophet, who, by striking the rock at divine command, brings about the miracle that allows his people to survive. Numerous figures gather around him to collect the water, creating a dynamic composition that combines dramatic gestures and a strong narrative intensity. The painting is associated with the circle of Angelo Solimena, a painter active in southern Italy during the second half of the 17th century and father of the renowned Francesco Solimena. Trained within the Neapolitan Baroque tradition, Angelo Solimena developed a pictorial language characterized by lively compositions, an expressive treatment of figures, and a marked interest in biblical episodes of great dramatic content. His works reveal the influence of Neapolitan painting of the Seicento and the naturalist tradition inherited from Ribera and the great masters active in the Kingdom of Naples.
