Oil on canvas from the first third of the 18th century. Framed dimensions: 40 × 35 cm. Canvas dimensions: 32 × 28 cm. Provenance: formerly in an Italian noble collection; important Spanish private collection. Vittore Ghislandi, known as Fra Galgario (Bergamo, 1655–1743), was one of the most refined portraitists of the Lombard sphere during the transition from the Baroque to the full Settecento, renowned for the psychological depth of his sitters and the atmospheric restraint of his compositions. In the present work, he depicts a young gentleman shown half-length against a dark, neutral background, from which the figure emerges with striking presence through subtle modulation of light that falls upon the face and the white collar. The direct yet composed gaze, the delicate treatment of the flesh tones, and the attention to expressive nuance reveal the artist’s ability to capture not only the sitter’s physiognomy but also his character. The red cloak, arranged diagonally across the shoulder and fastened with a small clasp, introduces a vibrant chromatic accent that contrasts with the prevailing earthy palette and demonstrates Ghislandi’s mastery in rendering textile qualities. The composition, intimate and concentrated, fully reflects the portrait models of the Bergamasque master, in which restrained elegance and psychological introspection constitute the essential elements of his pictorial language.
