Description: Gere is the most conspicuous of the so-called celebrity Buddhists, a position he has used to make known the suffering of Tibet under Chinese oppression and the tragedy of Tibetan exiles, including his friend and teacher, the Dalai Lama, but it will come as a surprise to many that Gere spends an equal, if not greater, amount of time behind the camera as he does in front. His haunting black-and-white photographs are presented with much fanfare in this beautifully produced volume, and they do not disappoint. Just as Gere's travels throughout India, Nepal, and Tibet determined his subject matter, his spiritual practice served as the source of their unusual and evocative energy. Gere's painterly photographs capture the motion that occurs even in stillness, and they possess surprising depth; the longer you gaze at them, the more you see. Some are detailed; others explore the stark contrast between shadow and light, and all subtly evoke the contrast between the cruelty of the Chinese army and the compassion of Tibetan Buddhists.
About the Artist: Richard Gere is an award-winning actor, humanitarian, photographer, and lifelong advocate for human rights whose steadfast support for the Tibetan people has shaped U.S. and international policy. As Chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet, co-founder of Tibet House US, and Co-Chair with Alejandra Gere of The Tibet Fund’s 2025 Annual Gala, Gere has used his global platform to defend Tibetan culture and expose the repression of millions living under Chinese rule. Through the Gere Foundation, founded in 1991, he has also advanced humanitarian causes worldwide, including the fight against HIV/AIDS and support for Indigenous peoples, refugees, and the unhoused. Gere’s fusion of artistic achievement and moral conviction continues to make him one of the world’s leading voices for compassion and justice.

Shipping costs will be determined by The Tibet Fund after a winning bidder has won an art work. The winning bidder will be responsible for any shipping costs. Winners in attendance at The Tibet Fund Gala on October 23, 2025 will have the option of taking any won artworks home with them upon payment. Winners in the New York City area will also have the option of picking up the artwork at The Tibet Fund office in Manhattan during business hours.
