Details: The Thrill Came Slowly, Cut Paper on Gampi with Threads and Stenciled Emily Dickinson Poetry, 11” x 14”, 2025
Description: This original artwork by Lesley Dill features a delicate handmade paper surface stitched with fine blue thread, upon which black silhouetted deer move across the page in various dynamic poses. Between the silhouettes, the words “The Thrill Came Slowly” are inscribed in Dill’s distinctive hand-lettered script, merging text and image into a single poetic gesture. The text references Dill’s poetic muse Emily Dickinson and her poem “The Thrill Came Slowly Like A Boom For.”As in much of Dill’s work, the piece transforms words into visual rhythm—inviting reflection on the physical and psychological pulse of feeling, memory, and poetic experience.
About the Artist: Lesley Dill is an American artist whose work explores the profound relationship between language, the body, and spiritual experience. Working across sculpture, photography, installation, and performance, she transforms words into tactile, visual forms that both reveal and conceal inner emotion. Drawing inspiration from poets such as Emily Dickinson, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Franz Kafka, Dill uses materials like paper, wire, horsehair, and bronze to give language physical presence. Dill’s work can be found in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; MoMA; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among many others.
