USN M1917 Naval Boarding Cutlass, WWI vintage, with the original black leather scabbard, stamped USN on the blued blade, having the distinctive falchion shaped blade with double edge clipped point and broad runnel, japanned steel hilt with a full half basket cup, black all-wood crisscross grip. 25" blade, 30" overall. Very good condition, spotting to the japanning.
The design was based on the Dutch Netherlands Klewang Cutlass model M1898-M1911. This was the first time that the US Navy manufactured its own cutlass and it is believed that the production took place at the Navy Yard either in New York or Boston. It was the last Official Naval Cutlass authorized for use as a personal weapon. There is no record of it being issued to any ship, and an unknown quantity were produced.
