- Lot Description
This Moghul Toradar Matchlock Rifle from the 17th century is entirely encased in beautiful mother of pearl, and measures an astonishing 6 ft long! This matchlock rifle is remarkable not only for its length but also for being lavishly decorated with the esteemed mother-of-pearl, which suggests it was crafted for an aristocratic or royal clientele. Many Mughal firearms of this type featured Damascus steel barrels, intricate gold koftgari designs, and engraved silver fittings. The curved stock, a characteristic feature, may have been designed for ease of use for its bearer.
Collectively, the Safavid, Mughal, and Ottoman empires are known as the Gunpowder Empires. Particularly from the 1500–1700s, they were among the strongest economic, cultural, and militaristic powers. Each trained and equipped their armies with the latest gunpowder firearms, particularly cannons and muskets. While used in battle, muskets were also used for leisure activities, particularly hunting. Such richly decorated firearms as this one were made for an aristocratic clientele. Guns of this style remained in fashion for several centuries with very little change.
Some examples of these rifles, including one from 19th-century Sindh, can be found in the Royal Collection Trust and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, showing their importance in history and artistry. One toradar was even presented to King Edward VII during his tour of India in 1875-76. This piece would be excellent to mount for display or as a centerpiece for a room or collection.
