A highly rare British 1827 Royal Navy Officer’s Fighting Quill-point Sword, this exquisite weapon belonged to a high-ranking officer who was awarded knighthood in the prestigious Order of the Garter. Manufactured by John Prosser, this sword features an expensive sharkskin grip and an elegantly engraved blade bearing the inscription DIEU ET MON DROIT ("God and My Right") along with the symbol of the Order of the Garter, Honi soit qui mal y pense ("Shame on him who thinks evil of it").
The Order of the Garter, established in 1348 by Edward III, is the most senior order of knighthood in the British honors system, second only to the Victoria Cross and the George Cross. The officer who wielded this sword was likely an elite member of the British Royal Navy, possibly having earned his knighthood through service in the Napoleonic Wars, the War of 1812, or other significant conflicts of the early 19th century.
The blade, measuring 29.5 inches with an overall length of 35.5 inches, remains in remarkable condition. The sword is accompanied by its original leather sheath, which, though brittle with age and partially split, retains its metal tip and still properly sheaths the blade.
A truly exceptional artifact, this sword represents the pinnacle of British military tradition and aristocratic honor. A rare and highly desirable piece for collectors of British and Napoleonic-era militaria.
