This exceptional Swedish Mauser M1896 Bayonet is a beautifully preserved and heavily marked example complete with its original frog hanger. The bayonet features the classic spear-point blade associated with the M1896 pattern and retains numerous inspection, acceptance, and inventory markings throughout. Particularly notable are the markings "in12/28 No 363" at the ricasso, multiple Swedish Crown inspection stamps, the number "792" stamped both near the blade base and on the crossguard, and the marking "E.A.B." on the scabbard. The abundance and clarity of these markings provide significant collector appeal and offer excellent opportunities for further research into the bayonet's service history and inspection records.
The Swedish M1896 bayonet enjoyed one of the longest service lives of any military bayonet in modern history. Originally designed for the famed Swedish Mauser Model 1896 rifle, it remained in active use through multiple generations of Swedish military firearms. Sweden valued the design so highly that the bayonet was later adapted for use with the Ag m/42 Ljungman self-loading rifle and continued to see service with certain support units well into the late twentieth century. Remarkably, some examples remained in military inventory until the early 1980s, giving the pattern a service life of more than eighty years.
Collectors have long admired the M1896 bayonet for its excellent balance, robust construction, and elegant proportions. The spear-point blade, hollow steel grip, and distinctive mounting system create a bayonet that is both functional and visually appealing. Despite their seemingly delicate construction, these bayonets proved remarkably durable through decades of military training and service. Many surviving examples show evidence of hard use, making highly preserved specimens with extensive matching markings and inspection stamps particularly desirable.
This example stands out due to the extraordinary number of visible markings, crisp inspection stamps, original frog hanger, and overall preservation. Combining Swedish military history, exceptional craftsmanship, and over eighty years of documented service heritage, it represents an outstanding addition to any collection of military bayonets, Mauser accessories, or Scandinavian militaria.
