This hand-colored folio lithograph is from the first edition of Dr. Anton Reichenow’s work Parrots of the World or Vogelbilder aus fernen Zonen. The work was published by Theodor Fischer in Kasse, Germany between 1878 and 1883. The highly decorative prints feature striking, rich hand-coloring.
Dr. Anton Reichenow (1847-1941) was a German ornithologist and herpetologist. He worked for nearly 50 years and made great contributions to ornithological studies at the turn of the 20th century.
Gustav Mutzel (1839-1893) was a famous German wildlife artist. He is credited for the drawings in this work which were drawn in a lively manner with remarkable accuracy. The parrots featured were all the then known species from Australia, New Guinea, Asia, Philippines, Africa and America.
