- Lot Description
1950. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated on the center left. 30 x 25".
A rare pre-Stonewall era homoerotically suggestive painting. The figures appear to be wearing jockstraps as opposed to an art studio posing strap. The artist signed and dated the work, in a tattooed like way, on the figure in the foreground.
Waterman attended the Portland School of Fine Art (now the Maine College of Art & Design), served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in WWII, and later became an art educator in the city at his own private atelier.
Provenance: property of a private Southern Maine collection.
