"Adam and Steve and the Apple." 2020. Diorama, mixed media. Artist signature, title, and date on the back of the piece. 8 x 8 x 5".
Notes:
In his Garden of Eden series, contemporary artist Fernando Carpaneda (b. 1967) sculpts and assembles miniature scenes of the biblical paradise. His dioramas touch on the art historical and theological point of reference, bringing to mind the works of Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Brueghel the Elder, while also acting as a sort of personal reliquary, showcasing an adoring moment between two men. In this primordial setting, the artist embraces the nude, male form as something natural and beautiful. Through sculpting in the miniature, Carpaneda invites the viewer to look closely and reflect on their own identity and experiences.
Born in Brasilia, Brazil in 1967, Fernando Carpaneda has quickly made a name for himself as a master of the sacred and intimate. He has developed an extensive body of work from hyperrealistic paintings to miniature sculptures, with a particular focus on the sanctity of the nude male form. His work has been exhibited in many acclaimed institutions such as the Leslie Lohman Museum of Art, The Heckscher Museum, The Long Island Museum, Arkell Museum, and The Tom of Finland Foundation, and his painting Pride is a landmark queer inclusion in the Permanent Collection of the Presidency of Brazil.
Nothing adverse to note.
