Ink wash on paper. Signed on the bottom left. 13 3/4 x 9 3/4".
Tsuyoshi Yoshida assumed his pseudonym after the death of his friend, the infamous Yukio Mishima (1925 - 1970), who had encouraged him to pursue his erotic illustrations depicting traditionally masculine Japanese men in line with Mishima's unique nationalistic views. A key figure in the earliest gay centered publications in Japan in the 1970s, Go Mishima's artwork filled the early issues of Barazoku and eventually Sabu, both publications becoming pioneers in gay male aesthetics in Japan.
The homoerotic manga genre controversially titled "bara", initially taking its name from Yukio Mishima's "Barakei" which is widely credited with reclaiming the term having been previously used as a pejorative for gay men in Japan, was pioneered in large part by Yoshida and his contemporaries works.
Yoshida came to define the aesthetic of Japanese homoerotic art and future manga by depicting masculine, yakuza-styled figures with heavy tattooing (a culturally taboo practice in modern Japan). Much like Tom of Finland in the United States and Northern Europe, Yoshida can be credited with redefining the national image of the Japanese gay male towards a hyper-masculine aesthetic, rejecting homophobic traditions of emasculating queer men.
Provenance: property of an international institution.
Minor spot of soiling at the top right of the figure. Some toning and wear to the edge of the sheet. Otherwise excellent condition.
