Includes: Civil War Confederate William H. Burgess used Marshes and Shepherd - Ponds Works - Sheffield Superior Bowie Knife; stag handle; German silver crossguard; leather sheath w/ German silver collar & tip cover
Blade Length: 11.75 in.
OAL:17 in. (17.75 in. w/ sheath)
Condition: Fair-Antique; blade appears to have been cleaned/polished and is very worn w/ scattered pitting throughout; markings are very faint; German silver pieces are worn w/ patina; stag handle has moderate wear & patina; leather is dry & cracked
-sheath & handle are likely not original to the blade; comes with extensive documentation and history on William H. Burgess
Marked: either side of the crossguard is marked "W. H. BURGESS"; underside of crossguard is marked "2" on both ends; left flat of blade is faintly marked "SUPERIOR BOWIE / KNIFE"; left Ricasso markings are very faint and can only make out parts of "SHEFFIELD", but would have originally read "MARSHES & SHEPHERD / PONDS WORKS / SHEFFIELD"; pommel is marked "OCT / 9 / 1858"
Note: William H. Burgess Sr. of Seguin, Texas served under Col. John B. Hood with Co. D of the 4th Texas Infantry in the Civil War.
