Dan Ostermiller is a prominent wildlife sculptor known for a highly realistic yet fluid style that combines exceptional craftsmanship, detailed knowledge of animal anatomy, and a sensitive understanding of animal character and movement. Raised in Cheyenne, Wyoming, he began working with clay at an early age under the informal training of his father, respected taxidermist Ron Ostermiller, from whom he learned to observe and accurately portray facial expressions, anatomy, and body language. He later worked as a hunting guide in Texas and traveled extensively, studying animals in their natural environments and developing his sculptural practice after moving to Loveland, Colorado. His firsthand observation and commitment to wildlife inform sculptures that emphasize grace, motion, and individual character, while his later work reflects a strong conservation ethic. Ostermiller has created hundreds of sculptures and has taught animal anatomy and characteristics internationally. His honors include recognition by the Governor of Wyoming at the 1987 dedication of his monumental sculpture at the Wyoming State Capitol, and his work is held in permanent collections including the Wyoming State Museum, Wildlife World Museum, and Colorado State University; he is also a member of the National Sculpture Society, Allied Artists of New York, and the Society of Animal Artists.
