Condition: Fair-Antique; wood stock & forend show heavy wear from use (common on buffalo guns); scratches, dings, chips & cracks are present; nails through bottom of stock to hold cracked part together; forend has very deep and heavy wear (likely from saddle wear); barrel, receiver & metal parts all have gray/brown patina w/ scattered rust & pitting; bore retains some brightness, but is mostly fogged w/ light pitting; strong rifling remains; mechanically functional, though lever drops loose; set trigger functioning perfectly
Marked: top of barrel is marked "J. P. LOWER" as he often did with his rifles; inside of the buffalo hide gloves, the initials "C.B." are sewn into the lining;
Includes: accompanied by antique pair of buffalo hide gloves and large frontier knife w/ buffalo hide covered sheath
-Sharps Rifle Company factory letter listing this rifle as Hunter's Rifle (later designated as a Model 1874), and “invoiced at the Hartford factory on July 16, 1875 to John P. Lower, gun and sporting goods dealer of Denver, Colorado Territory.” The rifle is listed as .45 caliber, 28 inch barrel, double triggers, open sights, and oil-finished stocks. Original price of $31.50! This order “consisted of two Hunter's Rifles, two Octagon Rifles and two Half-octagon Rifles”, as well as with reloading implements, 1800 empty shells and 240 sheets of patch paper for an order total of $256.66.
Note: John P. Lower is a storied gun dealer of the American West, who likely armed just about every “lawman, badman, Indian and gambler.” He was known for being in some Indian gun fights and well-renowned as a master gunsmith. This is an Old West collector's dream!
