Everett Spruce is known for Modernist-leaning landscapes, birds, trees and animals. Spruce studied art at the Dallas Art Institute and in 1931 he became gallery assistant at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. He was one of the "Dallas Nine" group of Southwest artists. Spruce served as chairman of the Department of Art and director of the Graduate Studio at the University of Texas at Austin. His work was exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburg.
