Joe Rader Roberts is known for his depictions of the historic frontier and creating grand western narrative paintings. Roberts studied art at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and worked as a commercial artist and illustrator in Houston, Texas. Several of Roberts' paintings of Texas Rangers hang in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and he was named the as the official Texas State Artist in 1974. His son, Gary Lynn Roberts, is also a noted Western artist.
