John Banovich is an internationally recognized wildlife painter known for large, dramatic oil paintings of African and other iconic animals in their natural habitats, combining meticulous realism, extensive field research, and a deep commitment to conservation. He studied Art and Zoology at the University of Montana and Visual Communications at the Art Institute of Seattle, and although he began painting as a child, he turned seriously to fine art in 1993, developing his practice through repeated research trips to Africa and India. Best known for elephants, lions, leopards, rhinoceros, and Cape buffalo, Banovich also paints wildlife from Asia and North America, emphasizing accurate anatomy, environmental context, and the scale and drama of wild landscapes. His work has been featured extensively at major venues including the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s Prix de West, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s Birds in Art, the National Museum of Wildlife Art’s Western Visions, the Gilcrease Museum, and numerous solo and international exhibitions. His many honors include the Safari Club International C.J. McElroy Award, Society of Animal Artists Presidential Artistic Achievement Awards, the Artists for Conservation Simon Combes Conservation Award, National Rifle Association Artist of the Year, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Artist of the Year, and multiple Awards of Excellence from the Society of Animal Artists. His conservation efforts, including the Banovich Wildscapes Foundation and projects supporting habitat protection and imperiled species, are an integral part of his artistic legacy.
