Michael Godfrey studied art at East Carolina University, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1982, and developed a representational landscape style strongly influenced by the Hudson River School. His paintings focus on the changing moods of light filtering through the landscape. Godfrey develops his compositions through field sketches, extensive photographic reference, and outdoor observation, particularly favoring early morning and evening light. His work received the Arts for the Parks Landscape Award in 1996.
