Mondel Rogers earned a degree in architecture from Texas Tech University, and his artistic approach combines his architectural knowledge with a deep firsthand familiarity with the history and landscape of the Texas plains. As a fourth-generation Texan raised among family stories of the West and surrounded by the remnants of historic ranch life, Rogers developed a strong connection to the region’s people, places, and changing landscape. His paintings are characterized by a masterful handling of light, color, texture, and expansive open spaces, while his architectural training informs his careful treatment of historic ranch buildings and structures. His work is featured in Old Ranches of the Texas Plains, a book containing seventy-six plates accompanied by the artist’s own historical comments on the subjects depicted.
