sight: 9 x 9.5 in., frame: 17.5 x 15 in.
Provenance: Property from the collection of a prominent Terrell Hills, Texas family
Literature: H. Delaborde and J. Gaddé, "Oeuvre de Paul Delaroche, reproduit en photographie par Bingham", Paris, Goupil, 1858, pl. 86
Lot Essay from Christie's: According to Delaborde and Gaddé this composition was Delaroche's last before his death in 1856. He had intended to make a large scale painting. The lightly indicated angels beyond the circular border suggests the artist was thinking of a more monumental work.
