Virginia Battaile (alt. Battle) Betts (Texas, 1880-1942), path through field of bluebonnets and cactus, oil on canvas (relined), signed lower left
sight: 10 x 13 in., frame: 13.5 x 16.5 in.
Provenance: Property from a home in San Marcos, Texas
Virginia Betts was born in Yazoo, Mississippi and resided in Waco before moving to Dallas in 1907. She studied a year in New York under William Merritt Chase, and in Paris before World War II when several of her paintings reportedly hung in the Paris Salon. Her specialty was portraiture. She exhibited in the Joint Exhibition of the Society of French Artists together with the National Society of Fine Arts, Paris in 1930. She also completed murals for the ballroom of the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas. Her mother was Mary Denman Battaile. Source: John and Deborah Powers, "Texas Painters, Sculptors, and Graphic Artists"
