An outstanding oil on canvas after Jean-Michel Basquiat that embodies the raw energy and explosive color that made him one of the most important artists of the 20th century. The portrait, executed in bold strokes of blue, red, yellow, and green, presents a skeletal, mask-like face with wide eyes and teeth bared in a frenetic grin, revealing Basquiat's fascination with anatomy, street culture, and primitivism. The surface is alive with frenetic brushwork, layering, and graffiti-inspired symbols, including his trademark crown above the eye. Jean-Michel Basquiat rose from the streets of New York as part of the SAMO graffiti movement before becoming an international art phenomenon. His meteoric career bridged the worlds of street art and fine art, blending influences from African art, music, poetry, and pop culture. His works explore identity, race, and power, often with biting social commentary. Despite his tragically short life, Basquiat's output transformed contemporary art and continues to resonate powerfully, with his paintings among the most sought-after worldwide. This piece is presented in a gilt frame and is an electrifying example of Basquiat's visual language, showcasing the frenetic energy, immediacy, and intensity that defined his oeuvre. Signed JMB on the lower left, and inscribed on the reverse with his iconic crown motif alongside the words King SAMO Basquiat Brooklyn.
