- Lot Description
A California village scene by Cornelis Botke, the Dutch-born painter, etcher, and muralist. Executed in oil on board and signed lower right, the composition depicts the historic village of Bodega, Sonoma County, centered on St. Teresa of Ávila Church, one of California’s oldest rural churches. The village later gained international recognition as a principal filming location for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 classic The Birds. The reverse retains period inscriptions identifying the subject as Bodega.
Born in Leeuwarden, Holland, Botke immigrated to the United States in 1906, studying at the Art Institute of Chicago before relocating to Carmel in 1919. He later established a studio near Santa Paula, California, where he and his wife, artist Jessie Arms Botke, became prominent figures in the state’s artistic community. Botke exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, while his murals remain in the Kellogg Company headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan, and Ida Noyes Hall at the University of Chicago.
