- Lot Description
An oil on canvas by George Demont Otis (1879–1962), signed lower right. The reverse bears the artist’s handwritten inscription “G.D. OTIS” on the canvas, a pencil inscription reading “Hallets Creek” on the stretcher, and the George Demont Otis Estate stamp. The title likely refers to Hallett Creek in Lassen County’s Honey Lake Valley, where members of the Hallet family were among the region’s earliest pioneer settlers after arriving in 1862. The spelling preserved on the stretcher appears to reflect a contemporary local usage of the place name.
Otis traveled extensively throughout California and the American West in search of landscape subjects, including frequent painting expeditions into neighboring Nevada. His documented 1932 painting Mt. Lassen, published in George Demont Otis: California Impressionist, confirms that he was working in the Lassen region during this period. The winding creek, rocky bluffs, and broad, semi-arid hills depicted here closely correspond with the landscape of northeastern California, lending further support to the identification of the scene as Hallett Creek in the Honey Lake Valley.

Condition
Appears to retain its original canvas. The painting has likely been cleaned and reframed. Examination under ultraviolet light revealed no indication of restoration or conservation.
