- Lot Description
An original lithograph by Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) titled Up and Down (Op en Neer), created in 1947 and pencil signed lower left. The composition is among Escher’s best-known explorations of impossible architecture, depicting a Mediterranean-inspired complex of staircases, arches, balconies, and courtyards that challenge conventional perspective and spatial logic. Created during the artist’s most celebrated period, Up and Down exemplifies the mathematical precision and visual paradoxes that established Escher as one of the twentieth century’s most influential graphic artists.
Dimensions: Sheet: 29.5 x 17 in. Image: 19⅞ x 8 in. Framed: 23.75 x 12.5 in.
Shipping: Free Sacramento pickup. Shipping via FedEx within the continental U.S. for $140 plus 1.5% insurance (unless waived in writing).
Condition
Examined out of frame. No indication of restoration or conservation observed under ultraviolet light. Moderate overall toning consistent with age. Pencil signed lower left.
