- Lot Description
An American Chippendale slant-front desk from the New York furniture trade, dating to circa 1780 and constructed with sycamore and beech secondary woods, as identified on the original invoice from Meetinghouse Antiques. During the late eighteenth century, New York emerged as one of colonial America’s leading cabinetmaking centers, where skilled craftsmen adapted fashionable English Chippendale designs using regional construction techniques and locally available materials. Desks of this form served as both practical writing furniture and symbols of refinement in prosperous homes, reflecting the growing sophistication of the young nation’s merchant class.
The desk was acquired during the 1980s by a Sacramento collector from nationally recognized antiques dealers Irvin and Dolores Boyd of Meetinghouse Antiques, Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, for $5,650. The Boyds spent more than four decades handling and exhibiting important Queen Anne and Chippendale furniture and were widely respected authorities in the field of early American furniture. Their original purchase invoice accompanies the lot.

Condition
Overall good antique condition. Complete fitted interior with all prospect drawers present. Surface wear, scattered scratches, shrinkage, and minor repairs consistent with age and use. The brass hardware appears to be an old, historically appropriate replacement set. Wear and evidence of past restoration commensurate with a desk of this age.
