A Vietnamese artist, Le Pho (1907–2001) is renowned for his idyllic floral paintings and ao dai-dressed women. Through his art, he created a sensuous yet unsettling rendering of Eden that included elements of Chinese painting, surrealism, and impressionism. The oeuvre of Le Pho includes paintings depicting domestic scenes that are artistic representations of memories of his childhood in Hanoi. A great deal of Le Pho's work focuses on what he considers appealing, thereby depicting flora and fauna, as well as private scenes of women and children. Following his graduation from the École des Beaux-Arts in Hanoï, Vietnam, Pho studied under Victor François Tardieu at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. During his early years, Le Pho painted many of his works using muted colors on silk. The painting Young Lady Tying Her Scarf (1938) is a classic example of this style, depicting a woman in a white headdress in Tonkin. His first solo exhibition in Paris was held that year as this piece, thus cementing his European reputation. Invoking the work of influential French painters Odilon Redon and Pierre Bonnard, Pho depicts vibrant interiors in a range of vibrant hues.
As a representative of Galerie Romanet from 1946 to 1962, Le Pho painted silk in more vibrant, intense colors. It has been noted that the artist's changing style is a reflection of how he is coping socially. Findlay Galleries helped Le Pho establish a presence in the American art market through his beautiful floral and women's paintings. Pho’s paintings were characterized by bold brush strokes, oil paint, and vibrant colors. Additionally, he found great pleasure in painting floral bouquets, of which he painted Les Anthuriums - blossoming flowers bursting from a porcelain vase.
A brief period was spent teaching painting in Hanoi before Pho relocated permanently to Paris. In addition to the Oklahoma Arts Center, he has several works in the collection of the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, as well as other institutions.
