French, 19th century. A French Provincial eight day carved oak tall case clock, the hood comprising a molded cornice surmounting the dial door facade with front glass pane over the clock face within an astragal molded door with central carved c scrolls with dart finial and flanking carved rosettes, hood sides with molded glass doors with conforming latches, surmounting clock waist section with waist molding and waist door with carved flower on long curved leaved stem, the molding flanked at upper left and right by carved rosettes, and at lower left and right by carved fleurs de lis surmounting a lower panel with carved central flower with two rows of petals framed by molding decorated with cavetto corners. The sides decorated with molded panels. Original clock face replaced with white enamel 18th century face by Balthazar with Roman numerals and brass dial framed by gilt bronze figural scene with surmounting central courting couple in sixteenth century dress within a garden landscape with roses. Clock face reads Balthazard "Rue de la Bretonnerie 9'6"1 a Beaugency." Original iron weights, the pendulum comprising a wooden rod with brass circular bob. Approximate height 81.25", width 16", depth 11". Provenance: From the Estate of Sam & Florence Inman, Atlanta, Georgia.
Crown wheel escapement, time and strike, all in working condition. Pendulum suspended with a wood rod - not original (see image #6). There are scattered chips and areas of repairs/patches. Replaced hardware to side glazed panels on hood flanking dial. Molding on left side back with wood loss. Prior evidence of wood worm8). Added hardware to back for structural support (see image #3). Molded plinth has flecks of white paint and probably a later addition.
